"International Literacy Day is an occasion to celebrate the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies everywhere with Skills."

๐Ÿ•‰️ Namasteji,

" Literacy opens the doors to knowledge and places. Literacy follows us everyday, unconsciously: at home, on TV, in shops, restaurants, work, buses, streets. Literacy is everywhere. Therefore, “the more you read, the more places you’ll go "

" Literacy is often associated with the ability to read and write. However, it is also about making sense of and engage in everything we read, write, listen to and talk about. This means that thanks to literacy our students will develop the ability understand what counts in order to communicate it. Communication is probably today’s most important skill. Yet some schools often teach maths, history, rigid grammatical rules, but with little guidance on how to express ideas clearly. This is not how we have built Latch-On. During the program students will complete a number of literacy activities which involves communicating with the whole class. As a result, all four core literacy skills are being engaged: reading, writing, listening and talking. "

'Literacy and Skills Development' to explore integrated approaches that simultaneously support the development of literacy and skills, to improve the lives and work of people and contribute to equitable and sustainable societies. This day also focuses on the various skills and competencies required for employment, careers, and livelihoods, particularly technical and vocational skills along with transferable and digital skills."

There are many ways you can get involved:

๐Ÿ“˜Start a community lending library ! Their street library lets students swap books from home.

Way back in 2017 when Bhilar, a village in Maharashtra’s Satara district, was declared a ‘village of books’ (Pustakanch Gaav) by the State government, it sparked an idea in Kerala. The office bearers of Bapuji Smaraka Vayanasala, a library in Perumkulam, near Kollam, in Kerala were determined to replicate it, and they have finally achieved their goal.

On June 19, Perumkulam was declared a ‘village of books’, by writer MT Vasudevan Nair, making it, possibly, the second in India and Kerala’s first. Even before Bhilar became a ‘village of books’, Perumkulam had placed its first public bookcase as an experiment in 2017, says V. Vijesh, a school teacher and former secretary of the library. Bhilar has specially created spaces with books, to encourage reading. Perumkulam’s Bapuji library, formed in 1948, is housed in a three storey building; writer M Mukundan is the patron of the library that has close to 625 members.

As part of Perumkulam’s transformation into a ‘village of books’, the library recently placed 10 pusthaka koodu (sloped-roof, house-shaped glass bookcases) across 10 spots in the village, which has a population of around 4000 people. “Each has 30-50 books, mostly children’s literature which the kids can borrow,” says Vijesh. There are a few books for grown-ups and newspapers too. The idea is aimed, primarily, at children so that the habit of reading is encouraged and nurtured early.
